A little Window Into Our Nursery Day Series  - Our Story Time Routine

3rd Feb 2026

We are so pleased to have all our Nursery families now taking part in our Big Bed Time Read Programme. This exciting programme focusses on developing parents’ understanding of the importance of reading to our young children, building not only a love of language and foundation for future learning, but also strengthening bonds between parent and child.

In our next video in our Parent Series we want to give you a little glimpse into the importance of developing Good Listening Skills for Story Time.

The Secret Superpower: Listening & Reading!

Did you know that listening is the foundation for almost everything your child learns at Nursery? It’s not just about hearing—it’s about focusing, understanding, and connecting with the world!

Why it matters for your little one:

  • 80% of Learning: Most Nursery learning happens through talk. Good listeners absorb new ideas faster!
  •  The Path to Reading: Before children can read words, they must be able to listen to the sounds inside them.
  • Making Friends: Good listeners are great at sharing, taking turns, and understanding how their friends feel.

Why we share books together:

  •  Brain Building: Reading aloud actually strengthens the "learning" parts of the brain!
  •  Million-Word Advantage: Children read to daily hear thousands of extra "gold star" words that helps make learning to read and write so much easier!
  • Focus and Patience: Listening to a story helps your child learn to sit still, concentrate, and follow a narrative—skills they’ll need for the classroom.

3 Easy Ways to Help Them Today:

  • Read Daily (Even 5 Minutes!): Whether it's at bedtime or bath time, a quick story sends a "pleasure" message to their brain about learning.
  • Make it a Conversation: Don't just read the words—ask, "What do you think happens next?" or "Why is that character sad?" This turns listening into an active adventure.
  • Model Good Listening: When your child talks to you, crouch down to their eye level and give them your full attention. They learn how to listen by watching you!

Let’s help our little ones "tune in" to their bright futures!
